How to make and keep a New Year’s Resolution

Did you know that only about 16% of people who set New Year’s Resolutions can keep them?

Yes, it is true, but this can be due to a range of reasons, such as a lack of motivation, time, and resources. Achieving your New Year’s resolutions doesn’t have to be so hard. These seven tips help you avoid this disappointment, stay motivated and help you achieve this New Year’s resolution.

Goals must be achievable and realistic

When deciding on your top goals, ensure that your plans fit into your lifestyle and an achievable timeline. Make your goal realistic rather than drastic. Choose a destination you see achievable to not only make but also stick to over the year.

Focus your goals

Many New Year’s resolutions start with ‘save money, ‘get in shape’ or ‘get organised’. Instead of resolving something so broad, focus the larger goal on smaller goals with purpose. For example, instead of ‘getting in shape, you could have a goal to run a marathon, go swimming once a week or go to the gym three days a week. Focusing will make your goal more achievable and allow you to make a concrete plan to implement into your everyday life.

Track your progress

Tracking your progress can not only give you direction on where to start but also will help keep you motivated throughout the process. You can log your progress into a journal or make notes on your phone. In doing this, you can stop yourself from losing sight of your goal and reinforce your progress.

Expect problems

Expect that throughout your journey, problems will arise. You may have a big event or assignment you need to focus on or you may need to take a break for your mental health. Try not to let these problems stop you from achieving your goals; accept that they are there, but don’t let them stop you.  When a problem arises, learn and adapt to continue your journey toward your goal. For example, say your goal is to go to the gym three times a week. Instead of quitting and stopping going to the gym altogether, go once a week or once every two weeks

Be kind to yourself

Finally, and maybe one of the most important tips is to be kind to yourself. Achieving a resolution is not always easy but being hard on yourself doesn’t make it any easier. Kind words, self-love and understanding that this process takes time and effort can go a long way in achieving your goals.
